Why is My Water Heater Making A Rumbling Sound?

We often hear homeowners complain about numerous problems regarding their water heaters. However, one problem that continues to bother people the most is hearing unusual rumbling sounds from their water heaters. In this article, we will discuss the possible reasons for hearing those noises.

What Causes These Rumbling Sounds?

One of the most common reasons for these rumbling noises to start making noises is that sediment starts building up in the water heater. This happens usually when the water heater has an excess of sediment or mineral deposits at the bottom of the tank.

The problem is especially widespread in areas where people use hard water. Mineral deposits such as lime and calcium, sand, and excess debris from the ground can enter into the water supply. After that, they start accumulating at the bottom of the water heater.

Eventually, the buildup of excess minerals at the bottom starts trapping water beneath itself. Afterwards, when you heat the water for personal use, the water trapped beneath the sediment starts to boil. As a result, the steam made creates the rumbling sound as bubbles pop against the sediment.

Is Sediment Buildup Dangerous?

Well, in the vast majority of cases, you don’t need to worry about your water heater exploding from the pressure. That only happens when the model is extremely old and has gone way past its expiry date.

However, the buildup of sediment can easily overheat the water heater tank, which causes the tank to deteriorate. If this goes on for too long, the deteriorating tank has the risk of leaking or bursting. This is why we recommend you take care of the problem immediately.
